Thoughtful Design for Contemporary Living in a Heritage City
ReFrame Studio works with property owners and self-builders across Bath, designing well-crafted, sustainable homes. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bath holds its built environment to an exceptionally high standard — and our work is shaped by the context, designing homes that are modern and considered while remaining genuinely sensitive to their surroundings.
Founding directors Carly and Scott first met while studying architecture in Bath, where they developed a shared interest in thoughtful, well-crafted design that responds to its historic setting.
Residential Architects in Bath
ReFrame Studio works with property owners and self-builders in Bath who want beautifully designed, contemporary homes — without compromising the extraordinary setting they're part of.
Bath is one of the most architecturally protected cities in the world. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its buildings are held to an exceptionally high standard — and rightly so. But within that framework, there is real opportunity for architecture that is considered, ambitious and thoroughly modern. Our work sits precisely in that space.
We design homes that are confident in their own time while remaining deeply respectful of their surroundings. That might mean a carefully crafted extension to a period property, a new-build house within a sensitive streetscape, or a self-build on a challenging hillside plot. In each case, the design response is shaped by its specific context — the grain of the neighbourhood, the quality of light, the relationship to neighbouring buildings and the architectural legacy that makes Bath one of the world's most celebrated cities.
Planning Permission in Bath
Navigating planning permission in Bath can be complex, particularly within conservation areas, listed buildings and historically significant settings. As an RIBA Chartered architecture practice, we guide clients through the entire planning process — from early feasibility studies and pre-application advice to preparing and submitting planning applications.
Our familiarity with Bath & North East Somerset Council and the city’s planning context helps us develop proposals that respond sensitively to their surroundings while meeting the needs of homeowners and self-builders. By combining thoughtful design with a clear planning strategy, we help maximise the chances of achieving a successful planning outcome.

Meet the Team
Our Bath studio is led by Carly, who grew up in the city and returned in 2021 after working in Cambridge, bringing her experience back to the place she has always called home.
Based in Bath, the studio works with clients across the city and into the surrounding landscapes of Somerset and Wiltshire. Carly has a strong understanding of the Bath planning process, alongside an established network of trusted local consultants and suppliers who support projects from concept through to completion.
She is available for face-to-face meetings and regular site visits, guiding clients through each stage with clear, collaborative advice. Her design approach is shaped by Bath’s Georgian architecture as well as the surrounding countryside of the Cotswolds and Somerset hills.
This local understanding informs projects that respond carefully to their setting, with a thoughtful, place-led approach that balances heritage, sustainability and contemporary living.
