RIBA Chartered Architects for Self-Builds and Renovations
ReFrame Studio is an RIBA Chartered architecture practice working with homeowners and self-builders across Wiltshire and the wider South West. We specialise in designing well-crafted, sustainable homes that respond to the county’s rich architectural heritage and its iconic rolling landscapes.
From the medieval streets of Salisbury and the golden stone of the Cotswolds to the rural charm of the Vale of Pewsey, Wiltshire offers a unique backdrop for residential design. We believe that every project- whether a sensitive barn conversion, a period cottage renovation, or a high-performance modern new build—requires a thoughtful approach that respects the local vernacular while embracing 21st-century sustainability.
Residential Architects in Wiltshire
ReFrame Studio has a strong portfolio of new-build homes across Wiltshire, ranging from carefully considered self-builds in conservation areas to deeply personal projects on family-owned land. Our work includes a contemporary self-build within the Cotswold conservation area and historic heart of a distinctive village, an accessible dwelling designed as an essential lifetime home in a rural setting, and a characterful new-build on a plot passed down through generations.
Wiltshire rewards those who take the time to understand it. Its historic market towns, vernacular flint and stone cottages, sweeping downland and quietly significant heritage settings give the county a character that is both rooted and varied. For self-builders, it offers something increasingly rare — the chance to claim a place in a genuinely beautiful English landscape, whether that means a contemporary home tucked into a village setting or a considered rural retreat with nothing but open countryside for company.
Planning Permission in Wiltshire
Navigating planning permission in Wiltshire can be complex, particularly within conservation areas, listed buildings, National Landscapes and Green Belt land. As an RIBA Chartered architecture practice, we guide clients through the entire planning process - from early feasibility studies and pre-application advice to preparing and submitting planning applications.
Our understanding of Wiltshire’s local planning authorities, combined with our experience of Green Belt policy and rural planning constraints, helps us develop proposals that respond sensitively to their context while meeting the needs of homeowners and self-builders. By combining thoughtful design with a clear planning strategy, we help maximise the chances of achieving a successful planning outcome.

Historic Wiltshire Village
New Oak-framed House
Sited within the Winsley Conservation Area, this new three-bedroom dwelling presented a quietly complex challenge — to design a home of genuine architectural ambition that could take its place within one of Wiltshire's most characterful villages. The response draws directly from the local vernacular: a pair of identical stone gables, connected by an oak-framed glazed link, echo the prominent gable forms found throughout adjacent cottages and historic buildings.
Sustainability runs through the project at every level, from the fabric-first insulation strategy to roof-mounted solar panels and an air-source heat pump.
A further dimension to the project to provide for the long-term adaptability without compromising the quality or character of the architecture. The ground floor is fully accessible, with provision made for a future lift and wheelchair circulation should it be needed. The result is a home that is genuinely future-proofed, architecturally distinctive and deeply respectful of the place it now calls home.

Meet the Team
Our Bath studio provides architectural services in the Wiltshire area. It is led by Carly, who grew up in nearby Bath and returned in 2021 after working in Cambridge, bringing her experience back to the place she has always called home.
Based in Bath, the studio works with clients across Wiltshire. Carly has a strong understanding of the Wiltshire Council planning process, alongside an established network of trusted local consultants and suppliers who support projects from concept through to completion.
She is available for face-to-face meetings and regular site visits, guiding clients through each stage with clear, collaborative advice. Her design approach is shaped by Wiltshire’s diverse architectural character - from its historic market towns and vernacular stone villages to its rural landscapes and heritage sites - as well as the surrounding countryside of the Cranborne Chase National Landscape, Salisbury Plain and the wider West Country.
This local understanding informs projects that respond carefully to their setting, with a thoughtful, place-led approach that balances heritage, sustainability and contemporary living.
